True Bloods Kristin Bauer Van Straten Talks Once Upon A Time
First Published: October 29, 2011 11:51 AM EDT Credit: ABC Caption Kristin Bauer van Straten as Maleficent in Once Upon A TimeLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- She plays the blood sucking vampire Pam on True Blood, but this Sunday night, Kristin Bauer van Straten has a new nemesis to tackle, as she heads to ABCs Once Upon A Time and it isnt a fairy named Sookie. As Sleeping Beautys Maleficent, Kristin is set to match wits with an equal Lana Parrillas Evil Queen. The Evil Queen needs to do evil and here and there she has to get the ingredients for this evilness and shes got this frenemy, Maleficent, and theyve been kind of helping each other and playing this chess game for years, Kristin told AccessHollywood.com of how she figures into the freshman dramas second episode. She needs a little bit of help to really wield her power, so shes gotta be able to figure out how to get that from Maleficent. Kristin explained that the Evil Queen will need her characters help after the plot twist in Episode 1 that sent a baby Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) into the real world. [At] the end of the pilot, [Snow White] has her baby and she puts it in a wardrobe and the baby is safe and thats where, then, the Evil Queen comes to me and shes gonna take it a step further because now shes really pissed, Kristin explained. The actress headed up to Canada to film her so-far one-episode arc and she said putting on the regal gown and headdress was a magnificent experience. [Ive gotten] a lot of help from costuming in the last couple years, she giggled. Theres no way to not feel slightly evil putting on this purple robe and holding a staff, with an orb. I just loved it, Kristin said of her Once Upon A Time costume. I started walking around the wardrobe room already like figuring out. It just gets in your body. Its unbelievable how much help you get from getting dressed up and looking like somebody else. Beyond Once Upon A Time, the actress and activist (shes currently working on a campaign to protect chimpanzees click HERE for more information) is heading back to the set of True Blood shortly for Season 5, where fans will finally learn about Pams back story. The door is open and it would be really fun to come back [to Once Upon A Time]. So well see because Im kind of back in the Pam world and its going to be amazing, she said. I just read the first script. I cant wait to find out more about Pam and I cant wait to actually keep investigating this world and see how they weave this storytelling and these fairytales and these iconic characters together, she added. Once Upon A Time airs Sunday at 8/7 C on ABC. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Nets wager on sitcom veterinarians for next season
Seasoned sitcom stars, for example Tim Allen of Do It Yourself and today Last Guy Standing, are earning comebacks.
Roseanne Barr is originating off Lives cancellation of Roseannes Nuts, but a show within the works includes a good shot at NBC.
Alley Hayes BelushiMcEntireKilbornBreuerNow that Tim Allen makes his TV comeback around the new comedy "Last Guy Standing," ABC and NBC are searching to some slew of other former broadcast-TV stars to repeat the task. Faces famous for toplining half-hrs returning a couple of decades -- think Roseanne Barr, Kirstie Alley and Sean Hayes -- are affixed to a proper quantity of the comedy scripts mounting up for that 2012-13 TV season. They are all wishing that whatever pixie dust got spread on Allen, who capped ABC's "Do It YourselfInch within the the nineteen nineties, works best for them also. Recent comedy hits like "Modern Family" and "The Large Bang Theory" are giving executives restored confidence within the half-hour format. And considering the fact that comedy had lengthy battled on broadcast TV until lately, it's only natural the nets are embracing a few of the key professionals from when the genre was going gangbusters. Script handles talent attached vary from the standard holding deals for the reason that they pair an actress having a author and/or concept instead of inserting them in later to some script that wasn't always customized to suit their voice. But like holding deals, they are largely meant to keep your talent within particular net's roof, though some pacts provide them with a chance to opt out or perhaps be blocked into other scripts later in development season. "Apart from a couple of exceptions, there is a lengthy time period there when actor-based talent deals of any sort were pretty nonexistent in the galleries and systems," stated UTA talent agent Mike Jelline. "As the healthiness of the television business, particularly around the comedy side, has enhanced so quickly in the last couple years, hunger of these deals has certainly elevated." "Standing" is a standout for ABC to date. Since premiering March. 12 because the net's greatest-ranked 8 p.m. comedy premiere in seven years, the show cooled off some but remained strong in the second week, decreasing just 9% to 10.a million audiences and three. rating/9 be part of grown ups 18-49. Banking on familiar faces is among the earliest methods within the programming playbook. A title having a solid history not just gives executives some reassurance within the always dangerous TV business but helps break with the cluttered fall sked with auds wanting to get reacquainted having a proven quantity. There is however no such factor like a sure factor. A few of these stars realize that very well considering the fact that they are already on the third or 4th comeback attempts. Barr, particularly, just came from the cancellation of "Roseanne's Nuts," an unscripted series on Lifetime. But she's wishing to become back on NBC with "Downwardly Mobile," a comedy from twentieth century Fox Television set inside a mobile-home park that reunites her with Eric Gilliand, professional producer of her the nineteen nineties smash "Roseanne." "Mobile" includes a script commitment plus penalty, passing on a good shot to create the schedule. Hayes, who started around the NBC sitcom "Will and Sophistication" from 1998-2006, is placed to star inside a gay-raising a child comedy from "Save Me" professional producer Peter Tolan via The new sony Pictures Television and Universal Television. Alley, who had two different series in front and tail finish from the the nineteen nineties with "Cheers" and "Veronica's Closet," is angling for any third with "The Manzanis," a comedy in regards to a brash Italian-American family that's already purchased to pilot at ABC from ABC Galleries and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. ABC can also be searching for talent from latenight's past, with onetime "Saturday Evening Live" cast member Jim Breuer and Craig Kilborn, former host of "The Daily Show" and the own CBS latenight series, mounted on scripts that will ask them to star in and professional produce their very own comedies. ABC can also be embracing some proven gamers in the aughts expecting lightning striking two times: Jim Belushi and Reba McEntire, who spent the greater a part of that decade headlining half-hrs, have put-pilot obligations for his or her scripts. NBC can also be sinking into 2000s-era talent giving a put-pilot resolve for Portia p Rossi, most particularly of Fox's "Arrested Development." Still more talent have script deals at ABC, that has "Curb Your Enthusiasm" supporting player Shaun Garlin, and NBC, that has the eponymous stars of "The Sarah Silverman Program" (Comedy Central), E!'s "Snoop Dogg's Father Hood" (E!) and "Dane Cook's Tourgasm" (Cinemax). There's much less talent mounted on scripts around the drama side, though a couple of, including Ethan Hawke and Jason Ritter, they are under consideration for brand new hourlongs at NBC. CBS could also play in the the nineteen nineties revival getting guaranteed former Fox sitcom star Martin Lawrence to some holding deal that may put him back to circulation next season. American helmer banks on China
BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA -- With all the buzz surrounding China's potential as an entertainment business giant, some filmmakers are not waiting for East to meet West.Beijing-based American helmer Dayyan Eng believes his experience working within the mainland Chinese system has helped him to succeed in the biz's fastest growing major market."The film industry in China is still growing and changing, but I've never really had that many problems with the system, because I came out of that environment and I started my career in China, so in a way that's all I know," Eng says. "I know how to play within the rules of the game here." His "Inseparable" made its international bow at the Busan Film Festival. The pic stars Kevin Spacey -- the first Hollywood thesp to appear in an all-Chinese-financed film; Christian Bale followed, in Zhang Yimou's "Flowers of War."Eng is cosmopolitan. He was born in Taiwan, grew up in Seattle, Melbourne and Macau, before moving to Beijing in his college years, dividing his education between the U. of Washington and the Beijing Film Academy.Eng combines his experience from film school in the U.S. with what he has learned in China. All his movies have been fully Chinese productions, although his crew is international."There are a lot of new companies and new money, which is a double-edged sword. If you have good projects, it gets easier, and if you're already established in the industry, it's easier," he says. But all that new money threatens to fund too many films, flooding the market and undermining quality -- something the West experienced in the middle part of the past decade.Eng's budgets are small, on par with what U.S. indies work with -- $5 million and under -- although he wouldn't be drawn on specifics. Unlike many films being made in China these days, Eng is looking at contemporary reality and not historical dramas. He believes that Chinese auds are tiring of chopsocky epics and there's a growing space for social dramas. Eng says he wrote "Inseparable" to be a Chinese story but with a global point of view. Spacey plays Chuck, an American expatriate in the southern city of Guangzhou -- China's third-largest city and an important industrial center and port. He lives next door to a down-on-his-luck white-collar professional, played by Hong Kong heartthrob Kevin Wu. Chuck tries to help Kevin turn his life around."('Inseparable') deals with the issues of taking on the big man and greedy corporations," Eng says, "and it didn't matter where Chuck came from. It felt like a natural step for me to see if we (could) get a Hollywood actor for the part, since I'm bilingual and bicultural." Wu was already attached, and once Spacey saw the script, he came onboard as well.Eng's had a history of landing top talent for his films. His previous pic, 2005's "Waiting Alone," a contempo drama about a group of well-off Beijing hipsters, featured Chow Yun-fat, and starred Xia Yu, Li Bingbing and Gong Beibi, who also stars in "Inseparable," as Kevin's wife. Eng's next pic, a heist/action movie, is aiming to shoot in Hong Kong next year. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

'Dolphin Tale' Dethrones 'Lion King': Box Office Report, September 30-October 2
Winter the dolphin may have no tail, but she has legs at the box office. 'Dolphin Tale,' which opened at No. 3 last week, swam to first place with an estimated $14.2 million. That was enough not only to dethrone the 3D re-release of 'The Lion King' after two weeks, but also to outperform all four of this weekend's new wide release movies: '50/50,' 'Courageous,' 'Dream House' and 'What's Your Number?' 'Dolphin Tale' did a little better than the $13 million or so that pundits had predicted. In retrospect, its victory isn't that surprising. It's playing in more venues (3,515) than any other movie, its only competition for family viewers is 'Lion King,' and it has excellent reviews and word-of-mouth. Its decline from last week's business is just 26 percent. Its two-weekend total is $37.5 million. 'Moneyball' held on to second place with an estimated $12.5 million, down just 35 percent from last weekend. Like 'Dolphin Tale,' Brad Pitt's baseball drama is enjoying strong reviews and word-of-mouth. Its ten-day total is $38.5 million. (Click here to read Moviefone's review.) 'Lion King' swapped places with 'Dolphin Tale' to land at No. 3 with $11.1 million, half of last weekend's take. The stunningly successful re-release has earned $79.7 million in three weeks. The Disney classic's lifetime domestic total is $408.2 million; another $7 million, and it'll surpass 'Toy Story 3' to become the second most successful animated movie of all time. In a three-way race for fourth place were new movies '50/50,' 'Courageous,' and 'Dream House,' which finished so close together that their actual rankings may not be known until final figures are released on Monday. Weekend studio estimates placed '50/50' in fourth place with $8.85 million. Predictions had the movie opening around $10 million, thanks to good reviews and relentless promotion by stars Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Still, $8.85 million isn't bad for a comedy about such a grim topic as cancer. 'Courageous' claimed receipts just $50,000 behind those of '50/50.' Made by the filmmakers who made a hit out of 'Fireproof' three years ago, it's a similar low-budget indie drama about cops and fatherhood, targeted to a faith-based and regional audience. Already, the film, which premiered on just 1,161 screens, has opened stronger than 'Fireproof' (which debuted with $6.8 million, toward an eventual $33.4 million). Its per-screen average of $7,580 was the best of any wide-release movie this week. 'Dream House' opened with an estimated $8.2 million. Like '50/50,' 'Dream House' was expected to open above $10 million, but it suffered from poor advance buzz, weak reviews, negative word-of-mouth, and the failure of its stars (newlyweds Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz) and its studio (Universal) to do much to promote it. The weekend's fourth new movie, 'What's Your Number?' opened in eighth place with only $5.6 million, according to estimates. (The No. 7 movie, 'Abduction,' came in only $50,000 higher, so the movies may swap places when final figures are released on Monday.) The Anna Faris comedy underperformed even its pessimistic predictions of $7 million, likely because of mediocre reviews and word-of-mouth. Overall, this was a slack weekend at the box office, with just $102 million in total receipts, though that's 4.4 percent better than the same weekend last year. For the first nine months of the year, 2011 is still 3.3 percent behind the same period last year ($7.8 billion, compared to $8.1 billion). 'Dolphin Tale' - Trailer No. 2 The full top 10: 1.
