Just When Was Matt Damon Larger Than Tom Cruise?
"Are Tom Cruise and Matt Damon beginning to change places?" reads the headline around the La Occasions blog 24 Frames. Following a disappointing returns for that opening weekend of 'We Purchased a Zoo' and also the remarkably muscular box-office for 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol,' Steven Zeitchik posits that Cruise has usurped Damon around the A-list -- an unexpected, thinking about Cruise was quickly becoming a box-office pariah 4 years ago. Good question -- specifically for a sluggish news week -- but does not it appear a little premature? In the end, was Matt Damon ever a real box-office draw? Think about these details: Damon's greatest financial hits, in chronological order, happen to be 'Good Will Hunting' ($138M), 'Saving Private Ryan' ($216M), 'Ocean's Eleven' ($183M), 'The Bourne Identity' ($121M), 'The Bourne Supremacy' ($176.2M), 'Ocean's Twelve' ($125M), 'The Departed' ($132M), 'Ocean's Thirteen' ($117M), 'The Bourne Ultimatum' ($227M) and 'True Grit' ($171M). Except for 'Good Will Hunting,' you can result in the argument that Damon wasn't instrumental in almost any of individuals films becoming achievements. He's the 3rd lead within the 'Ocean's' franchise behind Kaira Pitt and George Clooney he does not element in 'Saving Private Ryan' before the third act, despite being the titular private 'The Departed' and 'True Grit' are ensembles that do not always reflect Damon's singular star energy. Only 'Bourne' stands as proof of his solo box-office bona fides, as well as that may be asked. In the end, did Damon make 'Bourne' or did 'Bourne' make Damon? (This can get clarified next August, when 'The Bourne Legacy' with Jeremy Renner comes to theaters, sans Damon.) This isn't to express Damon is not (A) among the best and many pleasant stars of his generation and (B) a "superstar." To begin with, he stars in movies (duh, but nonetheless) for an additional, films like 'The Informant!' ($33M), 'The Adjustment Bureau' ($62M), 'The Good Shepherd' ($59M) and 'The Gifted Mr. Ripley' ($81M) might have never done in addition to they did without Damon's face around the poster. It is simply that evaluating Damon and Cruise appears specious at best -- particularly when even Cruise's recent "tanks," 'Knight and Day' and 'Valkyrie,' gained over $200 million worldwide. Think about it by doing this: if 'We Purchased a Zoo' had starred Tom Cruise, wouldn't it have made a lot more than the $13 million the film gained with Damon in the helm over Christmas weekend? (Put one other way: could it be any question that Tom Cruise is behind Cameron Crowe's greatest box-office hits?) So, no: Tom Cruise and Matt Damon aren't "beginning to change places." They never switched to start with. [via LAT/24 Frames] [Photo: Fox] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook
Fresh Prince's Janet Hubert Slams Will Smith: He's An A--Hole
Janet Hubert and Will Smith Bummed that Janet Hubert - the original Aunt Viv - wasn't at last week's Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion? Well, don't count on seeing her at any future ones either. The actress tells TMZ that she's still mad at NBC and Will Smith over her firing 18 years ago.The cast of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunites!"There will never be a reunion ... as I will never do anything with an a--hole like Will Smith," she tells the site. "He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn't know the word."Hubert and Smith had a notorious falling-out after she was fired and replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid following the third season in 1993. According to Hubert, NBC tried to reduce her episode count and slash her salary in half, and then let her go when she refused the terms - a move she believes Smith was behind. Smith has denied Hubert's claims and told an Atlanta radio station at the time that Hubert's bad attitude led to her dismissal. Hubert was pregnant during the third season and admitted to being "moody" at work, but said she was not part of the tension on set.Watch clips from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"I can say straight up that Janet Hubert wanted the show to be The Aunt Viv of Bel-Air Show because I know she is going to dog me in the press," Smith said then. "She has basically gone from a quarter of a million dollars a year to nothing. She's mad now, but she's been mad all along. She said once, 'I've been in the business for 10 years and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.' No matter what, to her I'm just the Antichrist."Smith has yet to respond to Hubert's latest comments.

Week in Review: The Golden Globes Try Sanity for a Change
It’s time to do some shopping, kids. After a week of semi-reasonable Golden Globe nominations (!) and the tragic downfall of The Daldry, I’m throwing away wads of cash at the Glendale Americana and never looking back. Do you think they sell the exotic headgear Elizabeth Taylor wore in Raintree County? Maybe at Zara or something? I don’t know. Let’s review the week and run away somewhere. · We had a fabulous week of interviews — check out our one-on-ones with Jeremy Renner, Jonah Hill, Brad Bird, and Guy Ritchie. · Hey, guess what? The Golden Globe nominations weren’t that crazy, and the Oscars are kind of a tight race this year. Is there a chance both ceremonies will be — I don’t know — dignified and entertaining? · Christian Bale is big trouble in little China, and he doesn’t even get to bed Kim Cattrall. · Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby looks like an amazing high school production of an Agatha Christie play. · Michelle Orange lived through Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, and now Mother Teresa’s feats are irrelevant in comparison. · I cheated with this week’s Bad Movie We Love and treated you to the greatest movie of all time, Clue. Which new/old releases are in your weekend plans? Share below!
'Breaking Dawn,' More: What's The Most Anticipated Movie Of 2012?
Next year will be a great one for films. The blockbusters alone have us with too many movies to be looking forward to. With epic superhero flicks, returns to old franchises and the ending of others, we are in for a real treat next year. But we need your help. We want to know what movie you can't wait to see next year. Vote in the poll below to help decide which is the film to beat next year. "The Dark Knight Rises" According to both Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan, this is going to be it for their take on Batman, so enjoy it while it lasts. With so much talk about how "Rises" will tie up loose ends and bring the series to a close, we need answers and won't be satisfied until we get them. Will Batman live? Is Catwoman good or evil? What the hell did Bane just say? "The Hunger Games" The adaptation of the best-selling young adult book put together an impressive trailer that had even people who weren't familiar with the story begging for more. In the movie, Jennifer Lawrence leads a great ensemble cast as Katniss, the girl picked to fight for her life in a sadistic fight to death with other teenagers. "Prometheus" It's an "Alien" prequel. It's not an "Alien" prequel. It looks a hell of a lot like an "Alien" prequel. Whatever it is, "Prometheus" has our attention not only because it marks Ridley Scott's return to the sci-fi genre he defined, but because an amazing cast and a script by "Lost" creator Damon Lindelof are not things to ignore. "The Avengers" What do you get when you put Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and Captain America in the same movie? We're going to find out this May, when the promises of five Marvel superhero movies finally pay off and we get the comic movie to end all comic book movies. Just on paper, you have to wonder how they could possibly screw this one up. "The Amazing Spider-Man" It's only been four years since the last Spider-Man film, but the web-slinger is getting the reboot treatment this summer with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. Once again, we're going back to the origin of Spider-Man, but this time he's facing off against Curt Connors aka The Lizard. "Dark Shadows" So far we've only seen one photo from Tim Burton's adaptation of the cult classic supernatural soap opera, but that's been more than enough to hook us. Johnny Depp transforms himself once again, this time playing the vampire patriarch of an extraordinary family. "Snow White and the Huntsman" One of the two Snow White movies hitting theaters next year, "Snow White and the Huntsman" takes more than a little inspiration from "The Lord of the Rings" for its take on the classic fairy tale. Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth star as the two title characters who have to face off against Charlize Theron's evil queen. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" Fans crammed into the theaters in November to catch the first half of the epic finale to the "Twilight Saga," and you can bet that even more of you will go to see how it all ends, but does it have enough to beat the competition for most anticipated of 2012? "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" More than ten years after "The Fellowship of the Ring," Peter Jackson is returning to Middle Earth to tell the story of how it all started. "An Unexpected Journey" will be the first of two "Hobbit" movies, and some familiar faces from "The Lord of the Rings" are guaranteed to show up, including Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom. "Skyfall" So maybe "Quantum of Solace" wasn't your cup of tea. Daniel Craig has come out and said that the last Bond movie wasn't everything it could be, but all of that is ancient history. Bond is back with a stand alone story and a cast, including Javier Bardem and Ralph Finnes, that is more than enough to bring us back. Check out our year-end polls: » Best Movie Ensemble » Best Sex Scene » Best Movie Robot » Best Dressed » Best Superhero » Best Couples » Best Set-Stalking » Best Ryan Gosling Moments » Most Likely To Win Best Picture » Most Anticipated Movie Of 2012 All this week, watch "AMTV" on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Paris' palette competes with L.A. duotone
The city is kind of a personality in Evening amount of time in Paris, and deeply looked into costumes and adornments aided recreate its past eras.Costume sketch for 'Midnight in Paris'Images were reduced to simple elements for black-and-white-colored design on 'The Artist.'There's irony in the fact while black-and-white-colored aficionado Woodsy Allen imagined the lost generation in "Evening amount of time in Paris" with painterly color, French director Michel Hazanavicius traveled to La to render the romance of Hollywood's quiet era in black-and-white-colored for "The Artist."When Allen and cinematographer Darius Khondji first spoken about the design of "Evening time" -- which moves among present, the expat paradise in the '20s as well as the Belle Epoque -- they considered both sepia tone and black-and-white-colored to differentiate yesteryear, then scrapped it "too radical, a lot of an effect,In . and went rather for a number of color palettes.Khondji carefully matched up while using other crafts artists. "We deliberately shot the present period getting a much better look," according to him. Khondji also used half-century-old Cooke contacts to supply period moments "a static, classic look," and applied more backlight and direct response to the heavier "almost porcelain" initial step toward makeup supervisor Thi Thanh Tu Nguyen's palette, which in comparison the design of women at Maxim's as well as the Moulin Rouge."For your '20s, the makeup was trendy and feminine," Nguyen states. "Your vision were made dark, the attention eyebrows were attracted carefully into an arch, as well as the lips were produced in to a heart shape with lipstick. For 'La Belle Epoque' the skin was very pale and apparent. The makeup was discreet, the attention eyebrows were attracted downward use a melancholy look."Khondji processed the negative to alter the appearance "even much much softer" the old-fashioned way, by flattening the contrast curve with Luxurious NY's senior DI colorist Joe Gawler. Gels and digital color timing imparted a subtle red-colored glow. Yet "it is necessary, even if the appearance is changed in publish, to show it properly," Khondji states.Costume designer Sonia Grande states she observes Paris' past "concentrating on the same fascination that kids observe a aquarium. This is why these textiles, textures, gems and materials were selected: fragile, delicate and vulnerable, sometimes sophisticated, sometimes with sheen."Knowing in advance the Woodsy Allen production wouldn't be trading time or money on publish effects, production designer Anne Seibel used the evening to pay for riding on the bus stops, traffic lights and signs and signs and symptoms of recent Paris, disguising elements that wouldn't recede to the darkness. Re-creating the Moulin Rouge was "toughest,Inch Seibel states, because the characteristic wooden floor and balconies forget about exist. "Finally I came across a concert hall that's quite modern but were built with a classic balcony." She scouted it with Khondji, illustrating along with her own sketches the way it might be cheated, selling him and Allen round the idea. "Paris which is miracle fortunate us," she states."The Artist" production designer Laurence Bennett hadn't labored in black-and-white-colored before, though he appreciated recollections of Chaplin, Lumiere and Melies -- and modern good good examples for instance "Hud" and "The Ultimate Picture Show." Throughout pre-production, he looked for guidance -- and received encouragement -- from British production designer Terence Marsh.Per Bennett, cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman developed a "practical decision" to shoot color film and process for black-and-white-colored. "I had been coming back for the roots within our craft. It absolutely was a thrill to reside in because world," Bennett states.Realizing that producing in monochrome "has associated with the reduction in the turn to simple elements," Bennett examined designs, textures and shapes. "Missing color for separation, you rely on pattern and tonality to define planes within the image."More youthful crowd built contrast involving the wealthy manses of quiet-era stars and moguls and L.A.'s shabby working class houses.Instead of the lost L.A. that Bennett was seeking, costume designer Mark Bridges learned that old fashion grew to become new again -- or may be made to appear new with the milliners at Western Costume. "You have to create conditions for your stars to exist in,In . according to him, "to enable them to imagine dwelling in the moment.InchLinks also specific inside a delicate balance involving the natural theatricality of glamorous art-deco L.A., reflected in dress motifs and fashions much like Chrysler-building chic, together with a regular realism that wouldn't take audiences in the story with annoying design. He used LeLuxe for '20s-inspired dresses. "Original dresses," he understood from experience, "falter.InchMake-up department mind Julie Hewett, who'd first labored in on "The Truly Amazing German," used monochrome monitors to preview her work, combating modern fashion. "We are equipped for full lips," she states. "Because era, the lips were squashed and tight." Hewett knows the quiet face-close up-up, getting done Lillian Gish's last movie, "The Whales of August." Large Media Still Lack Large Ideas Moguls No More Fear Netflix However Be Worried About Internet Video: UBS Confab Wrapup
For many strange reason, I figured a minumum of one Large Media mogul would make use of this week’s UBS Annual Media and Communications Conferenceto totally reset investor anticipation concerning the Industry. I anxiously waited for somebody tosay it’s time forexecs to prevent licking their wounds fromthe last decade’s disastrous mergers andrecessions and also to startlaunching dynamic job-creating initiatives. I even expected someone might hint in a major deal that will expand digital world’s way to obtain quality news and entertainment. The timing appeared suitable for the suggestions above since the majority of the CEOsnoted their companies are flush with cashand expectmuch more circulation their means by 2012, especiallyfrom the quadrennial advertising jolt supplied by political campaigns and also the Olympic games. (Forecasters stated that total domestic ad sales is going to be up between 3.2% to 4% in 2012.) Rather, the mogulsmostly ladled outthe same thin gruel they shipped throughout this season including their last round of earnings calls. They’ll collect additional revenues by syndicating content to digital streaming services. Or by demanding retransmission consent costs from pay TV companies. Andreturning cash to traders through returns or share repurchases.tough to build up enthusiasm aboutsuch unimaginative methods. As the overarching styles of the year’s conference seemed nearly the same as this past year’s, there is one important difference: Large Media isn’t scared of Netflix any longer. At this past year’s confab, moguls wondered openly whether or not they should license Television shows and films towards the fast-growing company that appeared poised to become gatekeeper towards the guaranteed land of Internet video. But Netflix Boss Reed Hastings packed the primary auditorium in the Grand Hyatt NY byasking traders to forgive him for that prices blunder in This summer that destroyed his company’s aura of invincibility — and led to a 76% decline in the value. Meanwhile, media moguls accepted Netflix since it’s now an essential customer for his or her content. Even Time Warner’s Shaun Bewkes retreated from his comment this past year that Netflix was such as the Albanian military attempting to take around the globe. The streaming service “is our friend,” Bewkes now states. News Corp COO Chase Careycalled Netflix an excellent venue for Fox’s series 24, which in fact had been tough to syndicate. And CBS’ L'ensemble des Moonves states that Netflix is much more friend than foe. Were rooting to allow them to expand. But moguls still disagree about whether Internet video will upend traditional media, an problem that’s dealing with new emergency as tech forces including Apple, Google, and Microsoft step-up their efforts to locate a devote people’s living spaces. Hastings states tv stations is going to be large nonwinners inside a couple of years as audiences flock to Internet-shipped implies that address narrow, personal interests. “To some extent well take a look at broadcast in two decades to be like [telephone] party lines, he states.Verizon Boss Lowell McAdam alsobelieves Web video appeals to pay for TV clients, possibly leading many tocut back onconventional satellite or cable services. The jurys out, but I do think theres a spot for over-the-top jargon for any digital option to traditional pay TV he stated. That model has not yet been determined and that i hope very well be a person for the reason that. By comparison, Moonves sees broadcast TV growing ever more powerful as audiences use DVRs and VOD,and perhaps old-fashioned antennas,to look at a lot of major systems’ shows. Viacom’s Philippe Dauman echoed it’s premature to count the Large Media old guard out. We spend about $3B annually on programming. Nobody stays a lot more than we all do, and would grow that.
